SMACNA-BC February 2023 Membership Meeting
I would encourage you to extend this invitation to your field supervisors (in addition to office staff), so they can learn some of the signs of addiction and be more aware of next steps and options available.
CIRP is a non-profit, joint union/management sponsored alcohol and drug treatment program, providing mental health and addiction services to the BC & YT organized construction industry. Destigmatizing Mental Health & Addiction; Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. For people who struggle with substance misuse, stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to seeking addiction treatment. People living with substance misuse will often hear labels such as “addict” or “junkie” or “user” these are incredibly negative terms and do nothing to improve issues such as self-esteem or sense of self-worth. Even within the health industry terms used to describe processes and outcomes can be laden with negative values “dirty” and “clean” are often terms used to describe urine tests results. We here at CIRP are committed to using language that is non stigmatizing and to help family members and others understand the damaging effects negative labelling has on recovery.
Vicky Waldron moved to Vancouver from the United Kingdom. She studied Psychology and Health psychology at the university of Bedfordshire and proceeded to work for health authorities, high profile industry leaders, CEO’s and wealth makers. Passionate about mental health and addiction the move from the UK led her to the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver helping perhaps some of the most marginalized and vulnerable populations in North America. Today Vicky uses that passion for mental health and addiction to help change the way the construction industry views addiction, to help its members regain healthy substance free lives.
Vicky has a Psychology Bachelors degree and two Masters Psychology degrees under her belt and graduated in the top 3 in her class ‘Summa cum laude’ and ‘Magna cum laude’ respectively. For more information about CIRP see their website https://www.constructionrehabplan.com/
